When you yourself are breaking it.
County Sheriff’s Deputy driving in the fog with no headlights, when back in June it became law that headlights must be on when visibility is reduced to 500ft or less.
I also watched someone in a C-Max driving with NO LIGHTS at 8pm last night roll right past a city cop and they didn’t do jack.
But then again no amount of cycling. flashing, or honking the whole time I was behind them got the message across.
People are just dumb.

This goes together with people who assume DRLs are headlights, and don’t realize that they don’t turn on the tail lights.

Saw plenty of those this morning too.
I bet the owner of the C-Max was bitching about how “dim” their “headlights” were, not realizing just the DRLS were on.

If the key is on the lights should be on.

I was behind a big rig on the freeway last night who apparently had something wrong with his hookups, because he had lights on the cab but none on the trailer.

i got so much attitude from some bitch who didn;t understand how to work headlights. I told her her lights were off, and she so no they are onI tried to explain and she made some bitchy reply. thankfully the light turned green and I quiclky headed in a different direction

S’why I miss my Camry and Subarus. Lights were on 90% of the time, and turned off with the key.

The Camry is good

Since it’s just getting dark when I leave work between 5-6 PM, now I see at least half a dozen cars driving around with no headlights on. The idiocy is astounding. A well-lit street makes people completely forget about using their headlights.
And I see cops do it ALLLLL the time, driving with no lights on when it’s way past the “30 minutes before sunset” law we have in our state.

Disagree.
I’m anti-DRL and anti-auto headlights. Not because I’m a luddite, but because I want to be reminded that getting into a metal cage and driving far faster than I can run, is a huge responsibility. And I want everyone else to understand that level of responsibility as well.

Mustangs kill people and reduce the numbers of man, hence good. #Zardozlogic

Turning on/turning off the headlights reminds you that you’re in a whirling death machine powered by exploding dinosaurs?
![]() 11/15/2016 at 13:58 |

No, but it reminds me that I’m NOT piloting a toaster on wheels. It’s a reminder that this (admittedly fridge-shaped) device is capable of great amounts of death and destruction if I’m not careful.
I mean, it’s not a Mustang, but still...

Oh man, people driving with no headlights on at night has become a major problem where I live. I always try flashing the high beams at them, but it rarely works.

People are impossibly dumb.
![]() 11/15/2016 at 14:21 |

Same here, though I usually cycle my low beams on and off first, to see if they get the hint. It works MAYBE 1 times out of 100.

Yeah, results are surprisingly poor. Maybe it’s just a remarkable number of people with blown fuses.

I’ve always wondered about that. Are they just trying to avoid a ticket because one of the headlights are out?
BTW, I once got a ticket for a nonworking headlight without the benefit of a warning. Fuck you West Windsor, NJ motherfuckers!
![]() 11/15/2016 at 15:21 |

I disagree. There’s lots of times I prefer to have my headlights, one being not shining them in my neighbors windows.
![]() 11/15/2016 at 15:22 |

That’s a good point. Subaru solves this by turning the headlights off in park.
![]() 11/15/2016 at 15:23 |

It’s because newer cars have the gauge cluster backlit all the time, add DRLs and nobody knows they’re off.

Well...

I once flashed my high beams at an oncoming car driving with no lights in the late dusk through rural Vermont (that might be redundant). Turns out it was a cop and I was shitting myself hoping he wouldnt pull me over. I didnt get pulled over but I was just left thinking, stupid cop driving without lights.

This is an absurd waste of the headlights. Sure they are relatively cheap, but full-on headlights are not all that useful in the middle of the day. During the summer, I rarely drive at night. Unless it is raining, I generally dont use my headlights at all for like June-July.

I am OK with paying this price.
![]() 11/15/2016 at 15:32 |

Seems like proliferation of automatic headlights is the number one culprit. Forcing someone to turn them on when they need them is a good habit. You only forget to turn them on if you are used to the car always doing it for you. Plus DRLs are often so bright and electronic gauges always lit (Hondas are a good example) that you wouldn’t definitely notice the lack of headlights.
I just don’t get why tail lights arent part of the DRL package.

Ugh this kinda thing is extremely annoying.
Here in California we are required to drive with our headlights on when it rains enough to warrant turning on the wipers... ALMOST NO ONE DOES IT, and at least half of the people that do, have auto headlights anyway...
![]() 11/15/2016 at 23:08 |

I’m not sure, I think in most cases it’s just people who are completely oblivious to the fact that they forgot to turn on their lights. In all fairness, it’s hard to tell in a well lit city sometimes, but still.
Oh brutal, you’ve gotta have a warning! It might’ve just gone out
![]() 11/15/2016 at 23:10 |
|
True story, you’d kind of expect the tail lights to be always on or something
![]() 11/16/2016 at 07:31 |

There’s time’s I’m moving too, like pulling into or backing out of the spot, or not as relevant now, sneaking in or out at night. Some other reasons I can’t think of now, maybe pulling up to a camp site and not blinding your friends, drive-in movies, etc. The real problem is the gauges being backlit 24/7, so nobody knows if their headlights are on or off. Used to be if you can’t see your gauges, you turned your headlights on.

Another instance I just found 2 weeks ago, and had to put another example out there. A local town has a bunch of christmas light set up on the main drag, people come from all over to see them. There’s a sign at the begining telling you to turn your headlights off. Somebody behind me didn’t for a few minutes. I suppose you could be the jack ass blinding everybody in front of you just trying to look at Christmas lights, but I don’t want to be. I’ll concede that parking lights can be lit as they’d be what I use in those instances anyway, but I do not want my headlights lit every minute I’m in the car.
